A 'go get'em' sort of book. One feels as if Ramsey genuinely believes in them. This book actually motivated me to make some changes in my life, and I am going forwards sharing this with my family. I highly recommend this to young adults.
At age 25 we're supposed to start putting away for retirement; this gives a solid education on how to get there, what to do, and how to retire with dignity. As someone who paid for college themselves, it is lovely to feel I have a personal financial advisor and an education about what a 401k is, Roth IRA, the snowball effect, and the 15% rule. Highly recommended. I rate Dave's message, method, and ongoing mission at 5 stars.
It feels wrong to give this book anything less than that in light of those things.That said. If you already know about Dave's baby steps, the debt snowball, the concept of getting out of and staying out of debt, investing wisely, living below your means, paying cash for everything, etc. This book feels like little more than a slew of Dave's familiar, motivational sound bites.
He does go into some greater detail in some things in this book than he does on a regular basis on the radio show, but-as someone who was already familiar with all of this, is on step 2, and felt it was likely a good idea to finally get around to reading the book-I don't think I got much more out of it than what I already had going in.If this is where your 'Dave Journey' starts, by all means, read the book and get started. But if you're like me and reading it is a back-fill, don't expect a whole lot more than what you already have. The Total Money Makeover – Dave RamseyI appreciate Dave Ramsey’s experience, knowledge, and insights. I think what makes him so good at what he does is that he had hit rock bottom twice because of some poor choices and had to rebound out of his own volition. Although I got quite a bit out of this book and enjoyed a lot of the personal stories from people all over the country, I thought it was a little more basic than I would have liked. I recommend reading The Complete Guide to Money instead. It covers everything in The Total Money Makeover and some more in-depth details about financial plans and budgets.
However, I can also say that you can never get enough encouragement and realistic advice from someone who has suffered and knows how sinister the hole of debt can be. This is still a good book.
This book changed my life, financial and otherwise. Ramsey breaks your makeover into baby steps that you can concentrate on and achieve.5 years ago I had credit card debt, a car loan, virtually no money saved and was frustrated/angry every time I had to sit down and pay bills.Fast forward to today. I have no debt except on my reasonable mortgage. I have money saved for emergencies, funding my daughters college funds, saving for my retirement, able to take my family on paid for vacation, and slowly killing off the mortgage bit by bit.I'm able to help and give more now than I ever have.
